Sir Charles Mackerras (1925 - 2010)

Prague's Rudolfinum has witnessed many musical premieres, but few seventy years after a works composition. During December 2008, Sir Charles Mackerras conducted the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra with singers Magdalena Kozena and Steve Davislim in the first performance of Martinu's Three Fragments from the Opera Juliette.

The death of Sir Charles Mackerras closes a remarkable career. Not only did he bring the music of Janacek into the mainstream, he was a pioneer in the performance of Handel and Mozart, and great with Gilbert and Sullivan. He lives on through his recordings.
