Ervin Schulhoff (1894-1942)

Born in Prague, Ervin Schulhoff studied at the Prague Conservatory, and then in Vienna, Leipzig and Cologne.  Politically, a communist, he sought refuge in Russia following the German occupation of Czechoslovakia.  With the subsequent German invasion of Russia he was arrested and died in a German concentration camp.

Schulhoff's music is alive to the musical currents in Europe and America, creating a personal idiom and voice that was silenced as he was about to enter his most creative years.
